Certificate of Lien WITHDRAWAL

Certificate of Lien WITHDRAWAL

A certificate of lien withdrawal will remove the tax lien from the taxpayer’s credit report. The IRS has discretionary authority to withdraw a lien if one of the four criteria is met according to the 1996 Taxpayer Bill Of Rights

  1. The lien filing was premature or not in accordance with the IRS procedures.
  2. The taxpayer and the IRS entered into an installment agreement.
  3. The withdrawal of the Notice of Federal Tax Lien will facilitate collection.
  4. The withdrawal will be in the best interest of the taxpayer, as defined by the National Taxpayer Advocate, and the United States.

You may send your request for a lien withdrawal on IRS Form 12277 to the technical advisory office in the state where the lien was filed.  For detailed information about your lien the best thing to do is to call the Centralized Lien Unit in Cincinnati at 800-913-6050 of by fax at 859-669-5152.
